The growth of social media is nothing short of astonishing. In 2007, we saw ~400,000 tweets per quarter; by early 2010 users were tweeting 50 million times per day. Per DAY. By mid-2010, Facebook told us they had ½ billion active users posting updates, photos, videos and expressing their likes and dislikes of products and businesses.

The numbers don’t lie: social media is an integral part of earned exposure. But it’s also much more than setting up a Twitter and Facebook account and repeating advertising messages. It’s easy to see why some quickly declare defeat when audiences are underwhelmed with a social media “one-off” (or two) and the company fails to find a dedicated following that helps with word of mouth.
